Out: album 'Your Truth Is A Lie' by EROS
For their debut, the trio pull off the trick of producing an album that sounds laboured over, yet could have been formed in one late-night think-tank of the subconscious. Half-remembered nights in dank, cold cellars try to fight their way into the foreground, only to be pushed back by the desire to live in the present moment.
Rather than adding up the merits they have each accumulated in projects over the last three decades and handing the listener a receipt for their investment, Eros sees each member surrender his assets and build something entirely new. Wilsdorf's signature sheen was honed over decades, from a start working at Hansa Tonstudios under Jon Caffery, to becoming Neubauten's engineer / producer / sound man of choice. This is evident in his final mix, but across their debut, the trio speaks in its own voice. O'Connor's mastery of rhythmic languages is present, but with a subtlety so that when Andrews's bass booms out, it speaks with vitality and authority.
'Your Truth Is A Lie' threatens to concede to a pop sensibility, albeit one that exists in a uniquely twisted wasteland that is worthy of the Berlin lineage in which it was birthed.
The album deepens the resolve Eros carved out on their mini-album 'A Southern Code' (2022), which is given a nod on two reworked tracks, featuring guest vocalist Rosa Anschütz, and pianist Annie Hogan, each broadening the textural scope opening Eros to new avenues. It's all here. 'Your Truth Is A Lie' twinkles like a diamond, while vibrating with the hum of electricity still present in an abandoned building.
